The Tour
Founded in 1969 as Clayton Junior College, Clayton State University sits on 192 wooded acres dotted with five lakes about twenty minutes south of downtown Atlanta. Home of the Lakers, its campus pairs modern academic halls with a lakeside setting and one of metro Atlanta's finest concert venues. This walk threads the academic core, the student-life hub, and the water's edge.
Clayton State University Campus Tour is a self-guided walking tour of Morrow, built around its campus side.
The walk covers 6 stops over about 0.8 miles and roughly 55 minutes, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.
What you'll see
Clayton State's campus feels more like a park than a commuter school. Five lakes and tall pines break up its 192 acres, and paths lead from modern academic buildings down to the water. This short walk takes in the everyday center of campus life, including the columned James M. Baker University Center. Nearby is a three-story science building from 2015 that overlooks the lakes.
The highlight is Spivey Hall. The plain brick building hides a 492-seat hall known for its clear acoustics and for the Albert Schweitzer Memorial Organ, with more than 4,400 pipes, built in Italy. Since Itzhak Perlman played the first concert in 1991, pianists, jazz musicians and choirs have made it a regular stop. Down the slope, a trail loops around Swan Lake, with an amphitheater facing the water.
The walk is short, about 0.8 miles, and takes about an hour at an easy pace on mostly paved paths. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons, and early evening light on the lake is lovely. If you can, time your visit for a Spivey Hall concert. The Georgia Roam app shares each stop's story as you arrive.
