GeorgiaMarietta National Cemetery was established in 1866 on 23 acres donated by Henry Cole, a local resident who had remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War, and was created to gather the nearly 10,000 Union dead from Major General William T. Sherman's 1864 Atlanta Campaign. Over the following years soldiers who had been hastily buried in shallow, wooden-marked graves stretching from Dalton to Augusta were disinterred and reinterred here, and by the time the transfers were largely complete many of the original markers and names had been lost, leaving thousands of unknowns. The cemetery holds more than 18,000 interments spanning the Civil War through later American conflicts and is now closed to most new burials, with grounds maintained in conjunction with the newer Georgia National Cemetery.
