GeorgiaAdel's Cook County Courthouse is a well-preserved product of the New Deal, built in 1939 in the Stripped Classical style by Atlanta architect William J. J. Chase and the Ray M. Lee Company, with the federal Public Works Administration underwriting roughly 45 percent of the Depression-era cost. Cook County had been carved from Berrien County only in 1918, making this comparatively young courthouse the seat of one of Georgia's newer counties. The two-story brick and limestone building was laid out on an unusual cross plan with an entrance on each of its four sides, and its steps were cut from Stone Mountain granite. It was enlarged in 1973 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995, where it stands as a good example of the austere public architecture that federal relief money brought to small Georgia towns in the 1930s.
