Woodlawn City Cemetery, recorded under the older name Salem Cemetery, is one of three separate Woodlawn burial grounds in Adel that are frequently confused with one another, the others being Woodlawn Annex Cemetery and the more modern Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. With roughly 2,700 documented interments, it stands as one of the town's principal historic cemeteries. Local records note that African American residents of the area were traditionally buried at the nearby Adel City Cemetery rather than here.
