Georgia chartered Oglethorpe University in 1835 as a Presbyterian college named for colony founder James Edward Oglethorpe, and it opened in 1838 at Midway near the then-capital of Milledgeville before closing during the Civil War. Educator Thornwell Jacobs refounded the university in 1915 at its present site on Peachtree Road in Brookhaven, north of Atlanta. Its Collegiate Gothic halls, built beginning in 1915 of blue Elberton granite and inspired by Oxford's Corpus Christi College, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
