Albany State University was founded in 1903 by Joseph Winthrop Holley as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute, offering elementary education and teacher training to Albany's Black community. It was renamed the Georgia Normal and Agricultural College in 1917 and Albany State College in 1943, and it became a center of the civil rights era when its students helped launch the 1961 Albany Movement. Today it is Georgia's largest historically Black university, operating East and West campuses along the Flint River following its 2017 consolidation with Darton State College.
