East Georgia State College opened in 1973 as Emanuel County Junior College, created to bring higher education to rural southeast Georgia. Local voters had approved a $2.1 million bond issue in 1971 and set aside 207 acres in Swainsboro for the campus, and the school welcomed a charter class of 167 students. It dropped "Junior" to become East Georgia College in 1988 and later East Georgia State College, before being consolidated into Georgia Southern University effective January 1, 2026.
