The Tour
East Georgia State College opened in 1974 with six buildings on a 207-acre wooded site in Swainsboro, 190 acres of it donated by Luck Flanders Gambrell. This short walk visits the campus's signature learning commons, its student center, its expanded academic building, and its community learning center with a full-dome planetarium.
East Georgia State College Campus Tour is a self-guided walking tour of Swainsboro, built around its campus side.
The walk covers 4 stops over about 0.6 miles and roughly 45 minutes, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.
What you'll see
This short walk explores a campus that has changed names more than once but never lost its role as rural east Georgia's front door to college. It opened in the early 1970s on pinewoods donated largely by a single local benefactor, and since January 2026 it has been Georgia Southern University's East Georgia Campus. The quiet, wooded setting feels more like a park than a college.
The centerpiece is the Luck Flanders Gambrell Center, the campus's main building since 2001. It holds the library and learning commons, an auditorium and a coffee shop, and it is named for the woman whose gift made the campus possible. You'll also pass the student center known as "the JAM" and a classroom building expanded for science labs. Near the newer entrance stands a community learning center with a vaulted great room and a full-dome planetarium that hosts school groups.
The route is about 0.6 miles and easy to walk in under an hour. Weekdays during the school year show the campus at its liveliest, and cooler spring and fall mornings are the most pleasant. The app explains the local bond vote that funded the college, its growth from junior college to four-year state college, and what the 2026 merger with Georgia Southern means for Swainsboro. The Georgia Roam app plays each stop's story as you arrive.
