The Story
Set beside the Toccoa Baptist congregation on Old US Highway 76 outside Morganton, this burial ground holds close to a thousand marked graves and ranks among the largest church cemeteries in Fannin County. Its most notable resident is Colonel Elijah Webb Chastain (1813-1874), a Georgia legislator and United States congressman who represented the state's northern mountain district before the Civil War. The pairing of a long-standing rural church with a prominent political figure gives the grounds a distinct place in the county's history.
