Shorter University was founded in 1873 by Luther Rice Gwaltney, pastor of Rome Baptist Church, as the Cherokee Baptist Female College, a women's school first housed on Shelton Hill in downtown Rome. Following major gifts from Alfred and Martha Shorter, it was renamed Shorter College in 1877 and later moved to its present hilltop campus as part of an early twentieth-century "Greater Shorter" vision. The college began admitting men in the 1950s and formalized its affiliation with the Georgia Baptist Convention, operating today as a private Christian liberal-arts university.
