GeorgiaAtlanta Contemporary is a non-collecting contemporary-art institution in Atlanta's Westside that presents exhibitions, artist studios, and public programs. It was founded in 1973 by a group of Atlanta photographers as Nexus, a storefront cooperative gallery for provocative contemporary photography, and evolved into one of the strongest alternative art spaces in the Southeast. The organization leased a former elementary school in 1976, expanded its programs, and in 1984 became Nexus Contemporary Art Center, also launching Nexus Press, a fine-arts press noted for artists' books. In 1987 it moved to a renovated warehouse complex on Means Street near Georgia Tech, and in 2000 adopted the name Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. It focuses on showing living artists, offering on-site studios, and presenting free-admission exhibitions of new work.
