History
The Georgia Institute of Technology was founded on October 13, 1885, as the Georgia School of Technology, part of Reconstruction-era efforts to build an industrial economy in the post-Civil War South, and it opened to its first students in 1888 offering a single degree in mechanical engineering. Its curriculum broadened to include electrical, civil, and chemical engineering by the early 1900s, and the school was renamed the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1948 to reflect its growing scientific and research mission. In 1961 Georgia Tech became the first university in the Deep South to desegregate without a court order.
