History
The Atlanta University Center is the nation's oldest and largest consortium of historically Black colleges and universities, formally organized in 1929 when John Hope, then president of both Morehouse College and Atlanta University, led the member schools to pool their resources. Its institutions trace their roots to the decades after the Civil War—Atlanta University (1865), Morehouse College (1867), Clark College (1869), and Spelman College (1881)—with the Morehouse School of Medicine added in 1975. Today the contiguous campuses in southwest Atlanta share the Robert W. Woodruff Library and allow students to cross-register among Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, and the Morehouse School of Medicine.
