The Tour
The historic heart of America's HBCU legacy. A self-guided Georgia Roam campus tour.
Atlanta University Center Tour is a self-guided walking tour of Atlanta, built around its campus side. It's one of 37 Georgia Roam tours in Atlanta — each a different route through the city, on your own schedule.
The walk covers 7 stops over about 2.1 miles and roughly 2 hours 6 min, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.
What you'll see
This walk crosses campuses that are right next to each other but still feel different. You'll see Morehouse's oldest building, a red-brick hall from 1889 that once held the whole college, and the chapel that honors its most famous graduate, Martin Luther King Jr. At Spelman, the historic oval is lined with brick halls from the college's Rockefeller-backed early years, and Sisters Chapel has hosted generations of students and civil rights gatherings.
At Clark Atlanta, a Collegiate Gothic building from the old Atlanta University graduate school stands over the main quad. The Robert W. Woodruff Library ties all four schools together, and its archives keep papers that document the civil rights movement. Nearby rises the clock tower of Fountain Hall, built in 1882 for Atlanta University and now a National Historic Landmark on the Morris Brown campus.
The route covers about 2.1 miles on foot and takes around two hours at an easy pace. These are working private campuses, so enjoy the buildings from outside unless you have a scheduled visit, and follow any posted access rules. A weekday during the semester shows the campuses at their liveliest. In December, the Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert fills the chapels. The Georgia Roam app plays each stop's history as you arrive.
