The Battle of Ezra Church was fought on July 28, 1864, in what is now western Atlanta during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. As Union Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard's Army of the Tennessee moved to sever the last railroads supplying the city, Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood sent the corps of Stephen D. Lee and Alexander P. Stewart to drive them off. The repeated Confederate assaults were repulsed by entrenched Federals at heavy cost, with roughly 3,000 Confederate casualties against fewer than 600 Union, though Hood's men did prevent the immediate cutting of the rail line.
