The Story

Completed in 1869, this is one of the oldest buildings in downtown Atlanta. As the Georgia Railroad's main freight depot, it anchored the rail hub whose chief engineer suggested renaming the young town Atlanta.

History

The Georgia Railroad Freight Depot was completed on April 22, 1869, and served as the main freight terminal of the Georgia Railroad; designed by the firm Corput and Bass, it stood among the tallest buildings in Atlanta at the time. Having survived the Civil War-era destruction of the city, it is one of the oldest surviving structures in downtown Atlanta. Much of the building burned in January 1935 and was rebuilt in its present lower form, and in 1981 the Georgia Building Authority renovated it into a public banquet and events hall.
