History

Georgia State University was founded in 1913 as the Georgia School of Technology's Evening School of Commerce, created so that working adults in downtown Atlanta's business district could pursue college courses at night. The school changed locations repeatedly in its early decades as enrollment grew and passed through several institutional identities before the Board of Regents adopted the name Georgia State University in 1969. Today it is a public R1 research university anchored in downtown Atlanta serving tens of thousands of students.
