Georgia State Museum of Science & Industry

The Georgia State Museum of Science and Industry was formally created by the General Assembly in 1955, though its collections trace to 1889, when the state asked its geologist to gather and classify Georgia's minerals, plants, and soils; temporary museum space was set aside on the Capitol's fourth floor in 1895. Occupying corridors within the Georgia State Capitol in downtown Atlanta, it grew into a display of the state's natural history, with wildlife shown in habitat settings, rocks and minerals representing every Georgia county, fossils, and Native American artifacts spanning thousands of years. In 1994 a preservation commission assumed care of the collection, and in 1997 the institution was renamed the Georgia Capitol Museum.
