The Story
The High Museum of Art is the leading art museum in the Southeast, on Peachtree Street in Atlanta's Midtown arts district. It grew from the Atlanta Art Association, founded in 1905, and took its name in 1926 when Harriet Harwell Wilson High donated her home to serve as the city's first permanent art museum. Its landmark white, curving building, designed by Pritzker Prize winner Richard Meier, opened in 1983 and was later cited among the best American architecture of its decade; a 2005 expansion by Renzo Piano more than doubled the campus. The High's permanent collection numbers more than 11,000 works, with notable strengths in nineteenth- and twentieth-century American art, folk and self-taught art, photography, and African art.
