History
This site honors Margaret Mitchell (1900-1949), the Atlanta-born journalist and author of Gone with the Wind (1936), which won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and became one of the best-selling novels in American history. Mitchell wrote much of the novel while living in a Midtown Atlanta apartment she nicknamed 'The Dump,' a building now preserved as the Margaret Mitchell House. She died in 1949 after being struck by an automobile while crossing Peachtree Street in Atlanta.
