The Story
Utoy Cemetery grew from the churchyard of the historic Utoy Primitive Baptist congregation, whose sanctuary served as a field hospital during the Battle of Utoy Creek, fought August 5 to 7, 1864, in the closing weeks of the Atlanta Campaign. At least three dozen Confederate soldiers rest on the roughly three-and-a-half-acre grounds, which also preserve a surviving section of earthen battle trench as a tangible link to the fighting. Burials at the site span American conflicts from the Revolution through the twentieth century.
