The Story
Also known as Freedman's Rest, this African American cemetery lies near the end of Petersville Road and holds the graves of formerly enslaved people and their descendants from the Broadfield area of northern Glynn County. Family tradition recorded by the Sullivan family holds that the burial ground was originally on land that became the Glynco base and later the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and that graves were moved to the present site while many earlier burials remained behind. Among those interred are Sancho Walburg, born about 1820, and Major Magwood, born in 1832, and the cemetery contains numerous unmarked graves.
