The Story
Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, on the Altamaha River just north of Brunswick in Glynn County, was a tidal rice plantation begun in 1806-07 by William Brailsford and worked by hundreds of enslaved African laborers until emancipation in 1865. The family continued growing rice until about 1913, then operated the property as a dairy farm until 1942; the last heir, Ophelia Dent, willed the estate to the State of Georgia in 1973. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has managed it as a state historic site since 1976, the same year it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the antebellum Hofwyl House and its furnishings survive largely intact.
