GeorgiaCalhoun sat squarely in the path of Sherman's 1864 Atlanta Campaign, and the town was largely destroyed by Union forces that spring; Sherman himself headquartered for a time in Calhoun at the house now known as Oakleigh, home of the Gordon County Historical Society, and the Battle of Resaca was fought just to the north. The present Gordon County Courthouse was built in 1961-1962, the third to stand on the site. It replaced a clock-towered brick courthouse designed by William Parkins and erected in 1889, which itself succeeded the county's original 1852 courthouse that a storm wrecked in 1888. The modern building anchors the Calhoun Downtown Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. The county rebuilt around its ruined center after the war, and the square has remained the seat of Gordon County government ever since.
