The Story
Fain Cemetery, on the eastern edge of Calhoun, takes its name from Joel C. Fain, a Confederate veteran, attorney, Georgia state legislator, and judge of the Cherokee circuit during the 1880s. The tract was originally part of Fain's estate and had been used for family burials before he offered it to the town; the city formally acquired the land in 1898. Laid out in orderly lots and once bordered by a stone wall and ornamental hedges, it grew into one of Calhoun's principal burial grounds and is still maintained by the city today.
