The Story
Chandler Cemetery crowns a hilltop roughly a mile and a half north of downtown Calhoun that was once part of planter Abraham Chandler's six-hundred-acre estate. Chandler was buried here after his death in 1847, and in 1856 his heirs deeded the wooded hill to the town for use as a public burial ground, several years before Gordon County was even created. Noted for the sweeping views from its summit, the cemetery gained a mortuary chapel in 1911 and remains under the care of the City of Calhoun.
