Piedmont University was founded in 1897 as the J. S. Green Collegiate Institute, opening in the newly planned town of Demorest with 367 students ranging from first graders to college juniors. It was renamed Piedmont College in 1903 and became Piedmont University in 2021. A private liberal arts institution in the foothills of northeast Georgia, it maintains campuses in Demorest and Athens, and its athletic teams are the Lions.
