Holsey Memorial Cemetery Number 2 is one of three burial grounds in Hancock County associated with Holsey Memorial C.M.E. Church in Sparta, all believed to honor Bishop Lucius Henry Holsey (1842-1920). Born into slavery near Columbus and later held in Sparta, Holsey became one of the most influential early leaders of the Colored (now Christian) Methodist Episcopal Church, elevated to the bishopric in 1873 and credited with securing the young denomination's footing among Black Methodists across Georgia.
