The Story
This is one of three Hancock County burial grounds named in honor of Lucius Henry Holsey (1842-1920), who was born enslaved near Columbus, Georgia, and rose to become one of the founding bishops of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, elected to that office in 1873. After the Civil War Holsey pastored the Black congregation in Sparta that eventually grew into Holsey Memorial CME Church, whose brick sanctuary was built in 1924 and was formerly known as Ebenezer CME. The cemetery reflects the deep roots of the CME denomination in Hancock County, where Holsey spent much of his ministry.
