This Warner Robins marker honors Butch, the University of Georgia's first bulldog mascot, a brindled English bulldog owned by local resident Mabry Smith. Spotted by students at the 1946 Georgia–Georgia Tech game, Butch served as the Bulldogs' mascot from 1947 until 1951, spending his off-seasons at Smith's home in Warner Robins. He died in the summer of 1951 after being shot by a policeman when he escaped his pen; the historical marker commemorating him was initiated by longtime resident Guy Fussell in 2004.
