The Story
Mount Hope Cemetery is the principal historic burial ground of Dahlonega, the north Georgia town made famous by the gold rush of the late 1820s and 1830s, and it sits just off West Main Street near the center of town. More than two thousand people are interred here, including two individuals recognized as notable figures. Several of the cemetery's oldest graves are marked by hand-carved folk headstones cut from locally quarried soapstone, a distinctive reflection of the region's early mountain craftsmanship.
