History
The University of North Georgia's Dahlonega campus grew from North Georgia Agricultural College, founded in 1873 on the grounds of the former federal mint that had closed during the Civil War. Opening in January 1873 to 177 students, it was Georgia's first coeducational public institution of higher learning and, as a land-grant school, required military training that endures today in its Corps of Cadets. In 2013 North Georgia College & State University consolidated with Gainesville State College to form the University of North Georgia.
