The Tour
The Military College of Georgia — gold steeples, the Drill Field, and the Corps. A self-guided Georgia Roam campus tour.
University of North Georgia Campus Tour is a self-guided walking tour of Dahlonega, built around its campus side.
The walk covers 5 stops over about 0.7 miles and roughly 1 hour 30 min, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.
What you'll see
This walk covers the part of Dahlonega where the gold rush, a federal mint and a military college all meet. The first thing you'll notice is Price Memorial Hall, a brick building from 1879 with a gold-covered steeple that you can see from all over town. It stands on the foundations of the U.S. mint that made gold coins here before the Civil War. The college opened in the empty mint building in 1873.
The walk also covers the military side of campus. The wide green Drill Field is where the Corps of Cadets forms up, and it's named for a graduate who became a four-star general. You'll also see Memorial Hall and the memorial wall out front, which lists alumni who died in service. The barracks, the Library Technology Center and the neighboring halls show everyday life for both cadets and civilian students, since most UNG students aren't in the corps.
The route is about 0.7 miles on hilly sidewalks, so wear good shoes. Autumn is the best season, when the foothills change color and the town is busy with festivals. On weekdays during the semester you may catch cadets in formation. The Georgia Roam app tells each stop's story as you arrive, and Dahlonega's historic square is just steps away when you finish.
