The Story
The Steffen Thomas Museum of Art sits on rural farmland in the Buckhead community of Morgan County, several miles southeast of Madison, and is devoted to the life and work of German-born Expressionist artist Steffen Thomas (1906-1990). Born in Fürth, Germany, Thomas settled in Atlanta in 1929 and worked there until his death; after he died, his widow set out to create a museum in his honor, building it with the help of family, friends, and collectors on land owned by his son. The museum opened in 1997. Its collection reveals the expressionist voice behind his personal art, spanning drawings, paintings, ceramics, mosaics, and sculpture, and it also maintains an archive documenting his career.
