History

Columbus State University opened in 1958 as Columbus College, a two-year junior college whose first classes met in the renovated Shannon Hosiery Mill on Talbotton Road with roughly 300 students. In 1963 the campus moved to its present MidTown site—formerly a dairy farm—and the school was granted four-year status in 1965, graduating its first bachelor's class in 1970. A unit of the University System of Georgia, the institution was renamed Columbus State University in 1996.
