The Battle of Pickett's Mill was fought on May 27, 1864, in Paulding County during the Atlanta Campaign, two days after the nearby fight at New Hope Church. Union Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard's corps assaulted entrenched Confederates under Maj. Gen. Patrick Cleburne and was bloodily repulsed, suffering roughly 1,600 casualties to about 500 Confederate losses. Preserved as a Georgia state historic site, the 765-acre battlefield remains largely unchanged since the fighting, with earthworks, roads, and a ravine where much of the combat occurred.
