The Story
Pickett's Mill Battlefield State Historic Site in Paulding County preserves the ground of the May 27, 1864 Battle of Pickett's Mill, where Confederate troops under Maj. Gen. Patrick Cleburne repulsed a Union flanking assault ordered by Sherman two days after the Battle of New Hope Church. The Federals suffered about 1,600 casualties to roughly 500 for the Confederates. Acquired by the state during the 1970s and opened to the public in 1990, the 765-acre site is regarded as one of the best-preserved Civil War battlefields in the nation, retaining original earthworks and troop roads.
