A distinctive local practice, used from the mid-20th century into the 1980s, placed burial vaults at ground level in tight rows to conserve space, a method reminiscent of the above-ground interments seen along the Gulf Coast. Because many families could not afford headstones, some painted the tops of the vaults to mark and locate their relatives. The privately held cemetery remains active today.
