The county's judicial roots run back through Jacksonborough, the first seat, which the legislature abandoned in favor of Sylvania in 1847. Jacksonborough is best remembered for the legend of the "Jacksonboro curse": in 1821 the itinerant preacher Lorenzo Dow, roughed up by a local mob and sheltered overnight by Seaborn Goodall, is said to have cursed the town, which soon dwindled to almost nothing. During Sherman's 1864 March to the Sea, Union Brigadier General Jefferson C. Davis's XIV Corps made Jacksonborough an overnight headquarters as it swept through the county. Screven first held court in private homes beginning in 1793.
