The Story
This large cemetery on Old Ogeechee Road in Sylvania contains more than 2,000 recorded burials, among them U.S. Congressman George Elliott Hagan (1916-1990). The grounds are also home to a Civil War memorial statue that once stood in Sylvania's downtown square; it was relocated here after the square was paved, and a later effort to return it downtown drew objections from Black residents who considered it offensive. The site reflects both the county's memorial traditions and its more contested public history.
