Georgia Southwestern State University (College & University)

Georgia Southwestern State University was founded in Americus in 1906 as the Third District Agricultural & Mechanical School, on land and money given by Sumter County citizens. It grew into Georgia Southwestern College (1932), went four-year in 1964, and became a university in 1996 — but its most famous chapter is personal: a local student named Rosalynn Smith began her public life here in the 1940s before becoming First Lady Rosalynn Carter.
