Oak Grove Cemetery was founded in 1856 on nine acres purchased from local physician Dr. Albert Rees, and its location at the eastern end of East Church Street ties it to the Americus Historic District. Notable burials include Charles F. Crisp, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in the early 1890s, and Dr. George F. Cooper, a founder of the city's public school system. In 1880 the remains of about 129 Confederate soldiers, many unidentified, were reinterred here from Andersonville, and the Ladies' Memorial Association of Americus erected a Confederate monument in 1899.
