The Story
Sometimes called the Jones Family Cemetery, this burial ground lies on the historic Greenwood estate west of Thomasville, where Tom Jones built a Greek Revival mansion for his cotton plantation around 1835 to 1840. Later owners included Colonel Oliver Hazard Payne, who bought Greenwood as a hunting retreat in 1899, and financier John Hay Whitney. The estate hosted a number of prominent visitors over the years, and Jacqueline Kennedy is said to have spent time in seclusion at the house following President Kennedy's assassination.
