The Story
Antioch United Methodist Cemetery adjoins a congregation that traces its beginnings to about 1830, when Antioch Methodist Church was first gathered in a log meetinghouse near the old Alabama Road. An 1855 deed named the church's trustees and conveyed the ground onto which the sanctuary was later moved, and early circuit-riding pastors rode horseback to serve it as part of the Thomaston Circuit. Records from before the Civil War were lost, with the earliest surviving minutes dating to 1866. The cemetery contains close to 600 graves, including an older unmarked section.
