The Georgia Baptist Convention established Truett-McConnell College in ceremonies at Cleveland, Georgia on July 23, 1946, naming it for Baptist ministers George W. Truett and his cousin Fernando C. McConnell. The two-year college opened in September 1947 with a class of 55 students, first in temporary quarters near the town square before moving to its present campus buildings in 1956. It was approved to offer four-year degrees in 2002 and today operates as Truett McConnell University.
