The Tour
Truett McConnell University sits on a 225-acre campus in the White County mountains at Cleveland, named to honor Baptist leaders George W. Truett and Fernando C. McConnell. Chartered by the Georgia Baptist Convention in 1946, it opened in 1947 with 55 students in temporary quarters near the town square before moving to its present grounds in 1956. This walk links the historic Baptist college to the campus of today's Division-affiliated Bears.
Truett McConnell University Campus Tour is a self-guided walking tour of Cleveland, built around its campus side.
The walk covers 5 stops over about 0.5 miles and roughly 40 minutes, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.
What you'll see
Truett McConnell's campus sits in the White County foothills just outside Cleveland, and this short walk covers its core in well under an hour. You'll see the Cofer Library and the chapel. Chapel services on Tuesday mornings bring the whole residential community together, and they remain at the center of life at this Georgia Baptist school.
Along the way the tour traces how a college that almost faded became a growing university. The Miller Building, the main classroom hall, was expanded in a building program announced in 2010, the largest in 40 years, after enrollment jumped. The Baptist student center reflects the school's roots in training ministers. The Student Recreation Center, finished in 2016, is the newest chapter for a campus whose enrollment has climbed from about 450 in 2008 to thousands today.
The loop is about half a mile on foot and takes roughly 40 minutes. It's a working campus, so buildings are for students and staff, and the walk is best enjoyed from the sidewalks on weekday afternoons or weekends. Pair it with a stop in downtown Cleveland or a drive up toward Helen. The Georgia Roam app shares each building's story as you arrive.
