On May 8, 1864, John W. Geary's division of Hooker's Union 20th Corps assaulted the Confederate-held Dug Gap on Rocky Face Ridge. The repeated attacks up the steep slope failed, but they masked McPherson's flanking march through nearby Snake Creek Gap.
