Incorporated in 1848, the town took its name from the W&A Railroad tunnel bored through Chetoogeta Mountain. On May 7, 1864, Sherman's forces seized Tunnel Hill to open the Atlanta Campaign, pushing Confederate cavalry south toward Mill Creek Gap.
