GeorgiaDalton stood at the center of the Civil War in north Georgia: the town served as the winter quarters of the Confederate Army of Tennessee in 1863–64 under General Joseph E. Johnston, and Whitfield County's original 1851 frame courthouse was burned by Union forces during Sherman's 1864 Atlanta Campaign. A two-story brick courthouse built in 1891 replaced it and stood until it was razed around 1960. The present Whitfield County Courthouse, completed in 2006 by the firm Abreu & Robeson, wraps and expands a 1961 courthouse on the same downtown square. Whitfield County was created in 1851 with Dalton as its seat, and through each burning and rebuilding the courthouse square has remained the anchor of the city that later grew into the self-styled carpet capital of the world.
