Resthaven Cemetery, also called the Washington City Cemetery, is the principal historic burying ground of Washington in Wilkes County and holds several thousand graves. Its rolls include Revolutionary War veterans and generations of the town's founding families. A long-overlooked section of the grounds contains the graves of enslaved people, most originally unmarked, some of whom were later identified with plain concrete markers. The cemetery reflects the early settlement of Wilkes County, whose planter families arrived from Virginia in the decades after the Revolution.
